Obama criticises Trump over Iran war and tariffs at Atlanta rally

Former President Barack Obama criticised President Donald Trump’s handling of the Iran war, trade tariffs and rising prices during a campaign rally in Atlanta on Wednesday, according to Al Jazeera. His remarks came as Trump held a separate rally in Ohio ahead of the US midterm elections.

Obama argued that the administration’s military campaign against Iran had weakened American security and increased pressure on consumers. He called the conflict an “unnecessary war” and said the United States had depleted missile stocks while Iran retained influence over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

He linked those conditions to higher oil and diesel prices, arguing that the effects extended to the cost of other goods. Obama also challenged the administration’s statements about the conflict, telling supporters that the war remained unresolved.

Trade policy was another central target. Obama said Trump’s tariffs had increased costs for American consumers rather than producing the economic benefits the administration had promised. He also disputed the president’s claims about tariffs reducing federal deficits.

Obama singled out the administration’s trade dispute with Canada, using sarcasm to question the decision to confront a close trading partner. He paired that criticism with an accusation that the White House was alienating allies while accommodating Russian President Vladimir Putin at Ukraine’s expense.

The former president also returned to his criticism of Trump’s White House renovation plans, including a proposed ballroom, changes to the Rose Garden and gold decorations. Revisiting an earlier joke comparing the decor to a Cheesecake Factory restaurant, Obama suggested the president was devoting attention to personal grievances while Americans faced financial pressures.

Across those subjects, Obama framed the administration’s priorities as the central campaign issue: whether its decisions on war, trade and spending were addressing the problems facing American households.
