No more profit in healthcare or schools – Green Party’s radical 2026 vision

Sweden’s Green Party is setting a bold agenda for the 2026 election, proposing to abolish for-profit healthcare and schools. The party’s platform argues that profit motives have no place in welfare, advocating instead for fully state-funded dental care and a school system governed by trust rather than market logic. To finance these changes, the Greens propose progressive capital and income taxes on the wealthiest, alongside environmental taxes on high emissions to support low-income households. They also want to move from a ‘throwaway economy’ to a circular economy, stressing that traditional GDP is an inadequate measure of welfare. The proposals mark a stark contrast with the centre-right Tidö coalition, which the Greens have sharply criticised for rolling back environmental policies.
