No. 9 Ole Miss looks to bounce back at slumping Vanderbilt

Ole Miss to Face Vanderbilt After Mixed SEC Start NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) will return to the gridiron on Saturday to play the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville after a bye week that allowed the Rebels to reflect on a season of highs and lows. Three weeks ago, Ole Miss upset LSU and former head coach Lane Kiffin in a top‑10 matchup, but the team fell 52‑28 at Florida. The Rebels are now ranked No. 9 in the country with a 3‑1 overall record and a 1‑1 mark in the SEC. Vanderbilt, 3‑2 overall and 0‑2 in conference play, will be the visitors. Rebels head coach Pete Golding said the team is focused on accountability and improvement. “We have to work our butt off and control the things we can control,” Golding told reporters. “If we do that and they go all‑in, we’ll win most of them.” He added that the return of leading rusher Kewan Lacy, who missed the Florida game with a shoulder injury sustained against LSU, is expected to bolster an offense led by Heisman Trophy contender Trinidad Chambliss at quarterback. Ole Miss’s defense has struggled, ranking last in the SEC in scoring defense (30.8 points allowed per game), run defense (194.8 yards allowed) and total defense (404.8 yards allowed). Vanderbilt’s offense, led by quarterback Jared Curtis, has been less productive. Curtis missed the Georgia game with a knee injury but returned to practice on Tuesday; coach Clark Lea said he is day‑to‑day. The Commodores rank 14th in the SEC in points scored (25.4 per game) and yards (349.4 per game). Lea emphasized that the best defense against Ole Miss is simply keeping the Rebels off the field. “We need to finish drives with kicks and avoid giving them extra possessions by turning the ball over,” he said. “We’ll also look to take advantage of explosive moments when they present themselves.” The game is scheduled for Saturday in Nashville, Tennessee.
