NIS contributions rise as full retirement pension age moves higher

Workers across Trinidad and Tobago are facing major changes to the National Insurance System, with contribution rates increasing and the age for receiving a full NIS retirement pension set to gradually move from 60 to 65.

The NIS contribution rate increased by three percentage points in January 2026, moving from 13.2 per cent to 16.2 per cent.

Another increase is expected in January 2027, when the contribution rate is set to rise by a further three percentage points to 19.2 per cent.

The second major change involves the age at which contributors can receive a full NIS retirement pension.

The full pension age currently remains at 60, but the increase will begin gradually in 2028.

Under the announced schedule, the age will move to 61 in 2028, 62 in 2030, 63 in 2032, 64 in 2034 and eventually 65 in 2036.

The phased approach means the full NIS pension age will increase by one year every two years over the period.

For workers, the changes mean higher NIS contributions in the immediate future, while the gradual increase in the full pension age will become an increasingly important consideration for retirement planning.

The measures represent significant changes to the country’s National Insurance System, particularly for younger workers who will experience both the higher contribution rates and the changing timeline for accessing a full NIS retirement pension. :::
