*Niamey, Niger –* Early Saturday morning, sustained gunfire and explosions were reported in multiple locations across Niger’s capital, Niamey, including the airport and the vicinity of the presidential palace.

According to four sources cited by Reuters, the incidents appeared to be the result of an attack by mutinous soldiers. A security source based in West Africa, quoted by AFP, indicated that the presidential guard was engaged in repelling the mutineers at the palace.

In response to the unrest, the Nigerien government announced the mobilization of additional troops to restore order and secure key sites in the capital.
