Nicaragua Severs Diplomatic Ties With Italy Over Red Brigades Fugitive Dispute

Nicaragua has officially ended diplomatic relations with Italy, escalating a conflict rooted in the case of Alessio Casimirri, a former member of the Red Brigades. The Nicaraguan government announced the severance on Sunday, accusing Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani of making aggressive and irresponsible statements.

The dispute centers on Casimirri, who was convicted in Italy for the 1978 kidnapping and murder of former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro. Rome has long alleged that Nicaragua has been protecting Casimirri, who has lived in the country for decades. Tajani recently reiterated those claims, prompting Managua’s sharp response.

In a statement, the Nicaraguan government said it would not tolerate what it called ‘unacceptable attacks on our sovereignty.’ The move severs all diplomatic channels and likely halts any ongoing bilateral cooperation.

The fallout could have broader implications for Nicaragua’s relationship with the European Union, as Italy is a key member state. Analysts say the break may lead to increased diplomatic isolation for Managua.
