New Countries May Join Mecca Agreement – Pakistani Ambassador to Russia

Vladivostok, Russia – Pakistani Ambassador to Russia Faisal Niaz Tirmizi said on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) that additional countries could join the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, which was signed by Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia on August 7.

The agreement, named after the holy city of Mecca, establishes a collective deterrence framework in which an armed attack on one member is treated as an attack on all participants. It also calls for expanded military cooperation, coordination and joint projects in the defense industry.

“So, of course, there is a possibility that other countries will join it and they will be part of this security architecture,” Tirmizi said during the forum.

He made the remarks in Vladivostok in early September, as the EEF gathered leaders and officials from across the region to discuss economic and security issues.

There are no further details at this time regarding which countries might join the agreement or the timeline for any expansion.
