Veteran Jamaican football coach and broadcaster Neville Bell has expressed deep disappointment over Jamaica’s failure to qualify for the World Cup, arguing that the national team had one of its clearest opportunities to reach the tournament.
Speaking during an appearance on the No NDA Podcast, Bell said Jamaica’s failure to progress affected him more deeply than defeats involving the clubs and teams he otherwise supports.
“The only time I lose any sleep over football is when Jamaica don’t do it,” Bell said, explaining that he can accept defeats involving teams such as Arsenal or Barcelona but finds national-team setbacks much harder to take.
Reflecting on Jamaica’s qualification campaign, Bell said he believed there was “absolutely no reason” the country should not have reached the World Cup, describing the route as the easiest Jamaica had received.
However, he suggested that the apparent simplicity of the qualification path may itself have contributed to the outcome, with expectations potentially leading people to underestimate the challenge.
Bell also pointed to the financial implications of missing the tournament, saying World Cup qualification would have brought significant money into Jamaican football that could have helped address grassroots and development needs.
He remains hopeful about Jamaica’s future opportunities, noting that the expanded World Cup format provides additional qualification places.
