The Namibian national cricket team is set to face South Africa in a three-match One Day International (ODI) series beginning today at the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground. The series follows a recent T20 competition against South Africa and Zimbabwe, where Namibia finished last despite remaining competitive in several matches.
During the T20 series, Namibia secured an 18-run victory against South Africa on August 28. Although they lost subsequent matches, the team demonstrated strong performances, including a narrow five-run defeat to Zimbabwe and an 11-run loss to South Africa in a high-scoring encounter.
Namibia coach Craig Williams expressed pride in his team’s ability to challenge higher-ranked opponents. He noted that while the team experienced lapses in concentration, the experience gained from the T20 series was valuable. Regarding the upcoming 50-over matches, Williams stated that the team intends to adhere to their established game plan, which has yielded positive results in the Cricket World Cup League Two.
South Africa has made adjustments to its squad for the series, calling up batter Matthew Breetzke and pace bowler Corbin Bosch to replace the injured Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Andile Simelane. Breetzke holds an ODI batting average of 64.18, while Bosch has been recognized for his performance as a number nine batter and his recent inclusion in the South African test side.
Namibia will retain the same squad that competed in the T20 series, featuring batters such as Jan Frylinck, Gerhard Erasmus, and Nicol Loftie-Eaton, alongside a bowling attack led by Ruben Trumpelmann, JJ Smit, and spinners JC Balt and Bernard Scholtz.
The first match of the series begins at 09:30 today, with the remaining two matches scheduled for Friday and Sunday.
