**More Than 1,000 Drivers Caught Speeding in 24‑Hour Police Operation**
DUBLIN – A nationwide speed‑enforcement initiative run by An Garda Síochána and its road‑safety partner GoSafe recorded over 1,000 drivers exceeding the legal speed limit during a 24‑hour period that began at midnight on 30 August and concluded on 31 August.
The operation, part of the annual “National Slow Down Day,” was intended to highlight the dangers of excessive speed, encourage compliance with speed limits and deter dangerous driving behaviour. Garda officials said the timing coincided with the first full week of schools reopening, when traffic volumes typically increase, and that particular attention was given to traffic around schools at opening and closing times.
Among the recorded offences, a driver in County Donegal was measured at 194 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. In County Kildare, another motorist was clocked at 128 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, while in County Galway a vehicle was recorded at 104 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
In a statement released on 1 September, An Garda Síochána noted that speed enforcement is carried out daily and that National Slow Down Days are held each year to reinforce road‑safety messages. “The aim of National Slow Down Days is to remind motorists of the serious risks associated with excessive or inappropriate speed, promote greater compliance with speed limits and support efforts to deter and detect dangerous driving behaviours,” the statement read.
The operation forms part of broader efforts to reduce speed‑related collisions across Ireland. No injuries or fatalities were reported in connection with the speed violations captured during the 24‑hour period.
