State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit announced that the government has adjusted fuel prices in response to the Middle East crisis and the risk of cross‑border smuggling.
Speaking after a meeting with government officials and civil society representatives in Jhenaidah, Amit said the Middle East situation has adversely affected fuel prices worldwide.
He explained that domestic fuel prices were increased to deter smuggling to neighboring countries.
Amit noted that global oil prices remain volatile and are higher than those in many neighboring countries, creating a risk of cross‑border smuggling.
He added that fuel purchased with remittances earned by Bangladeshi expatriates should not be smuggled out of the country.
Amit said the government hopes the international market will improve once the Middle East crisis is resolved, after which domestic fuel prices could be readjusted.
He stated that if an opportunity arises to lower fuel prices below the current level, the government will take action.
Regarding load‑shedding, Amit said the government is working to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply in rural and remote areas during the irrigation season.
