South African authorities are on the lookout for a 28-year-old Malawian woman suspected of stealing R10 million (about MK1.05 billion) from her employer in Durban. The suspect, identified as Fatima Lawerence—who also uses the name Esther on her passport—is wanted after a theft at a home in KwaZulu-Natal.
Her employer alleges that jewellery worth approximately R1 million, including old gold pieces and several Kruger coins passed down through generations, was stolen. Additionally, R10,000 in cash was reported missing. Lawerence had worked as a domestic worker for the family for about seven years.
The theft was discovered when the family returned home at around 5:30 pm on Sunday, 12 July 2026. Police believe Lawerence may be attempting to leave South Africa for Malawi and is reportedly travelling with her five-year-old daughter.
The case has sparked widespread attention due to the staggering amount involved and the long service period of the accused. Authorities are coordinating with Malawian officials to prevent her escape.
Anyone with information is urged to contact South African police as the manhunt intensifies.
