Malawi to build own fertiliser plant by 2028, reduce import reliance

The government of Malawi has announced plans to establish a fertiliser manufacturing plant by the 2027/28 farming season, aiming to slash the country’s dependence on imported fertiliser. Agriculture Minister Roza Mbilizi made the disclosure on November 5 2024, revealing that Morocco’s OCP Africa has already dispatched a team of experts to conduct feasibility studies. The move is expected to stabilise fertiliser supply and reduce vulnerability to global price fluctuations, a critical step for Malawi’s predominantly agricultural economy. Mbilizi stated that the plant will be developed in partnership with OCP Africa, leveraging their expertise in fertiliser production. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance food security and promote sustainable farming practices.
