Luxembourg’s First International Air Route: The 1962 Fokker Friendship to Brussels

Luxembourg’s first scheduled international air route was launched in April 1962, connecting the Grand Duchy to Brussels via a Fokker F27 Friendship turboprop operated by Luxair. This route marked the beginning of Luxembourg’s modern aviation history, following the completion of Luxembourg-Findel Airport in 1946. The airline, originally founded as Luxembourg Airlines Company in 1948, began operations with a single leased Fokker Friendship, carrying 12,000 passengers in its inaugural year.

The Fokker F27, a versatile turboprop, was ideal for short-haul routes and became a symbol of post-war European connectivity. Luxair’s early focus was on business travellers, offering seamless connections to larger intercontinental airlines. By 1967, the fleet expanded to include two more Friendships and a Vickers Viscount, reflecting the ‘Golden Sixties’ economic boom that fuelled demand for air travel. The route to Brussels was not just a commercial success but also a strategic move, positioning Luxembourg as a regional aviation hub.

Economically, the route facilitated cross-border trade and tourism, while socially, it reduced isolation for Luxembourg’s growing middle class. The introduction of charter flights to the Mediterranean in 1968 further cemented Luxair’s role in leisure travel. Today, Luxembourg-Findel Airport serves 60 destinations, but the 1962 Brussels route remains a foundational moment in the country’s aviation story.
