Main Points
The Dominican Olympic Committee (COD) is preparing for a pivotal election scheduled for December 2, a process that could bring significant changes to its Executive Committee. The upcoming vote comes after a period of internal turmoil, during which the COD has faced accusations of mismanagement and the suspension of five national sports federations. Some observers claim that these suspensions were unjust and retaliatory, contributing to a deepening divide within the organization. The COD, which governs Olympic sport in the Dominican Republic, has been described by insiders as having undergone a “traumatic path” in recent years. The internal divisions have been fueled by disputes over leadership decisions and the handling of federation suspensions, raising concerns about the stability of the committee. In the lead-up to the election, several prominent sports leaders have announced their candidacies. Gilberto García, the president of the Dominican Judo Federation, is the most widely supported candidate for the presidency of the COD. García has garnered strong backing from fellow federation leaders, including William Ozuna, the president of the Dominican Weightlifting Federation. Ozuna is expected to run for the position of Secretary General, a role for which he is considered well‑qualified due to his experience in both the COD and his federation. The president of the Dominican Aquatic Sports Federation has also declared his intention to run for the treasurer position. His candidacy is seen as a continuation of his track record of effective management within his federation and his current role on the COD’s executive board. The election is expected to determine whether the COD can restore unity and stability after a period of conflict and allegations of unfair disciplinary actions. The outcome will shape the committee’s direction and its ability to support Dominican athletes on the international stage. Article source: El Nuevo Diario | Image credit: El Nuevo Diario
