Laoag City is tightening security across its schools, with Vice Mayor Rey Carlos Fariñas pushing for stricter peace and order enforcement to prevent crimes and illegal activities on campuses.
Speaking on the city’s security initiative, Fariñas emphasized the need for adequate police visibility in all 40 public schools and 24 private schools, which are part of the city’s broader effort to protect students and educational institutions.
“We must ensure that our schools remain safe spaces for learning,” Fariñas said, noting that the city government has requested additional police personnel from PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. to meet the ideal 1:500 police-to-population ratio.
The move comes as Laoag, home to 80 barangays and a daytime population that swells due to its role as the economic, political, educational, and religious center of Ilocos Norte, seeks to bolster security across all its communities.
The school security crackdown is part of a larger citywide initiative to improve public safety, with local officials coordinating with barangay tanods, the Schools Division Superintendent, and the police to implement the measures effectively.
