A Kenyan international relations scholar has warned that Africa must actively participate in the artificial intelligence revolution or risk being left behind. Cavince Adhere, speaking at the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, noted that with its youthful population and rapid digital adoption, the continent stands at a critical juncture. He said without active involvement, Africa risks widening the global AI divide. The conference, which runs from July 17-20, has been hailed by experts as a key platform for inclusive global cooperation on AI governance, ethics, and safety. Adhere’s comments underscore the urgent need for capacity building and equitable access to AI technologies for developing nations.
