“Je ne sais pas si on va tenir le coup” : sur LCI, un syndicaliste policier alerte sur le surmenage des forces de l’ordre face aux mobilisations

Emmanuel Macron has warned that the next wave of social mobilization, scheduled for Saturday 31 October, could be “at risk.” He said the government would deploy a large number of police officers in anticipation of the potential return of student blockades at the start of the school year and of an inter‑syndical demonstration on 5 November. The autumn has seen a surge of protests in France’s major cities, beginning with the student blockades that started in September. The police force is preparing for another Saturday of demonstrations, following the earlier actions on 17 and 24 October. Syndicates have called for a meeting on 5 November to coordinate their activities. On LCI, Rudy Manna, national delegate of the UNSA Police union, admitted uncertainty about the police’s capacity to cope. “I don’t know if we will hold up,” he said. Manna warned that the police could become overworked, noting that the “Gilets jaunes” protests had required about 70 000 officers on the streets for many Saturdays. “If we need that many officers again, it will strain us even more,” he added. Manna also expressed concern that the return of student blockades at the start of the school year could add to the pressure. “We didn’t see what the holidays were like. We were on the ground, and we didn’t see our children,” he said, suggesting that the police would face a “cherry on top” of the current challenges. Macron has promised “order” and “strong announcements” to address legitimate demands, but the scale of the upcoming demonstrations remains a concern for law‑enforcement officials.
