Jamaica’s Former Parishes Offer Clues for Family History Research

A Jamaican family history search can lead to parish names that no longer appear among the island’s administrative divisions. The Library of Congress’s Jamaica genealogy guide lists Metcalfe, Saint Dorothy, Saint George and several others among parishes that existed before the boundaries were fixed in 1866.

The guide explains that the number and existence of parishes changed during English and later British colonisation. Its list of former parishes also includes Port Royal, Saint David, Saint John and Saint Thomas in the Vale. These names provide historical context for researchers encountering unfamiliar locations in older material.

Compiled by Library of Congress reference specialists, the guide identifies print and online resources for Jamaican family history, parish history and regional research. It brings together the institution’s own collections with external repositories and websites relevant to tracing Jamaican forebears.

Its historical introduction also sets out successive movements of people to the island. These include the forced transportation of enslaved Africans and, after the abolition of slavery, the arrival of indentured workers and immigrants from the Indian subcontinent, China, the British Isles, West Africa, Germany, Portugal and Greater Syria.

The guide distinguishes two dates that can matter when placing a family’s history within the broader chronology: the abolition of slavery on August 1, 1834, and full emancipation on August 1, 1838, following the apprenticeship period.

For readers beginning a search, the resource offers a framework that connects family records with changing administrative geography and historical periods. The former parish names are a useful reminder that researching a Jamaican place may require understanding what it was called when a document was created.
