Jamaica: North Carolina Man Sentenced for Supplying Personal Information to Lottery Scammers

Troy Murry, a 57-year-old resident of North Carolina, has received a sentence of just over 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. This sentencing is a result of his involvement in a scheme that allegedly supplied personal information of millions of elderly Americans to lottery scammers operating out of Jamaica.

According to the United States Department of Justice, Murry was active in this fraudulent operation for a period of seven years, from 2016 to 2023. He reportedly sold “lead lists” that contained names, phone numbers, addresses, and other personal details of elderly individuals to scammers, which generated over $5.2 million in profits for himself.

Victims of this scheme are said to have lost more than $9.5 million due to the fraudulent activities associated with Murry’s actions. Investigators have indicated that Murry became a significant figure among Jamaican scammers, who would reach out to him through various communication methods, including phone calls, emails, and text messages, to acquire these lists of potential victims.

The lists were typically sold for around $500 each and contained between 100 and 300 names. Murry’s actions have garnered considerable attention from law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the ongoing issue of fraud that specifically targets vulnerable populations.
