Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, met with executives from Chinese defence giant Aerospace Long-March International Trade Co. (ALIT) at Fort Portal State Lodge, marking a significant step in the two countries’ defence cooperation. The meeting focused on equipment transfers, defence technology, professional education, and military training.
ALIT, a key player in China’s aerospace and defence sector, is known for supplying military hardware and technology to allies. The partnership signals Beijing’s growing role in shaping Uganda’s security architecture.
This development comes as Uganda seeks to modernize its military capabilities. The collaboration could include advanced surveillance systems, drones, and training programmes for Ugandan forces.
Analysts say the deepening ties reflect China’s strategic push into Africa’s defence sector, raising questions about regional power balances and Uganda’s traditional alliances. The meeting was described as productive, with both sides committing to further engagements.
