The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed the country’s full compliance with ASEAN protocols regarding the mitigation of forest and land fires. This statement follows concerns over transboundary haze affecting several regions across Southeast Asia.
Ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela stated that Indonesia has consistently met ASEAN requirements since the regional bloc activated its Level 3 Alert status on August 26. Under this status, member states are required to submit daily reports detailing hotspot data, smoke trajectory projections, and local emergency response efforts.
During a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, September 17, Nabyl confirmed that Indonesia is providing daily updates, including environmental conditions and information on ongoing fire suppression operations. These reports are distributed by the ASEAN Secretariat to member states to assist in regional anticipatory measures.
While reports indicate that haze has reached parts of Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that it has not received any formal complaints. Spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang stated that the government has not received any diplomatic protest notes from neighboring countries regarding the situation.
International efforts to assist with fire suppression are currently underway. Japan deployed three helicopters for firefighting operations between September 12 and September 19. Additionally, Malaysia has expressed its readiness to provide assistance and is currently awaiting a response from the Indonesian government.
According to the Ministry of Forestry’s SiPongi monitoring system, satellite data recorded 1,037 high-confidence hotspots across Indonesia as of the evening of September 15. This figure represents a decrease of 400 hotspots compared to the previous day, suggesting progress in containment efforts.
