India, Panama Discuss Deeper Trade, Digital, and Logistics Partnership

India and Panama are moving to strengthen their bilateral ties, with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal meeting Panama’s Foreign Minister Javier Eduardo Martinez-Acha Vasquez in New Delhi on Wednesday. The talks focused on deepening cooperation in trade, investment, logistics, digital infrastructure, and business-to-business engagement. Goyal said on X that they held ‘productive discussions’ on leveraging India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, including UPI, to advance collaboration in digital payments and governance. The leaders also explored ways to improve market access and unlock new trade opportunities. Earlier, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal held separate talks with Vasquez to boost maritime cooperation, identifying logistics, shipping, maritime security, skill development, and digital transformation as key pillars. Vasquez, who earlier hailed India as ‘already a superpower,’ pitched Panama as India’s strategic gateway to Latin America, emphasizing the Panama Canal’s role in global commerce. The meetings signal India’s expanding economic footprint in the region.
