Iceland Rescue Crew Safely Tows Stranded 475-Tonne Fishing Boat to Dalvík

A disabled 475-tonne fishing vessel, the Hildur, was safely towed to Dalvík on 20 October after its propeller became entangled in fishing gear. The rescue operation, carried out by the ICE-SAR vessel Sigurvin, ensured all eight crew members remained unharmed throughout the incident.

The Hildur lost propulsion roughly halfway between Siglufjörður and Grímsey, leaving it drifting in calm conditions. Weather at the scene was reported as favourable, reducing risks for both vessels. Sigurvin, one of ICE-SAR’s newer rescue vessels—weighing just over 30 tonnes—arrived at the disabled boat at around 11:00 local time. Crews from both vessels worked together to secure a tow line, beginning the slow journey to Dalvík. The two ships entered the harbour shortly after 16:00, where Sigurvin positioned itself alongside Hildur to guide the larger vessel safely to the quay.

The operation highlights Iceland’s long-standing tradition of maritime rescue, where volunteer and professional crews regularly respond to emergencies at sea. This incident follows a 2025 rescue near Rif harbour and the successful recovery of a coastal fisherman after his boat began sinking. No injuries were reported during the tow, and Sigurvin returned to Siglufjörður afterward to remain on standby for further calls.

The Hildur incident underscores the critical role of Iceland’s search-and-rescue fleet in safeguarding both crew and vessels in often-challenging coastal waters. With favourable conditions playing a key part in the successful outcome, the operation serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness in maritime emergencies.
