How Billionaire Wealth Exploded While Middle-Class Families Struggled Through Recessions

Between 2020 and 2021, as millions of Americans faced job losses and financial instability during the COVID-19 pandemic, the wealth of U.S. billionaires surged by $2.071 trillion—a 70% increase. Meanwhile, middle-class families like those of Liz, Mary, and Howard in a University of Michigan study saw their fortunes stagnate or decline. Liz, raised in a household with less than $700 in net worth, never recovered from the 2001 dot-com crash and 2008 financial crisis, ending up with negative wealth by 2013. Mary, the median-wealth family, managed to hold onto her home but saw her net worth plateau after the Great Recession. Howard, born into affluence, used his college degree to build wealth that far outpaced his peers.

The data reveals a widening gap: the top 1% of Americans now own 50% of U.S. stock and mutual funds, up from 40% in 2002. Since 1989, the share of national wealth held by the richest 0.1% has quadrupled, while the bottom 50% have seen their wealth shrink or turn negative. Even during economic downturns, billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos saw their fortunes grow exponentially, with Musk becoming the world’s first trillionaire in 2026. Tax records show that while the top 0.01% now pay a smaller share of total U.S. taxes than in 1953, their share of national wealth has ballooned from 2.5% to 9.6%.

The disparity isn’t just statistical—it’s political. Billionaire families spent $2.6 billion on elections in 2024, a 16-fold increase from 2000, shaping policies that often favor wealth accumulation over broad-based prosperity. The study highlights how economic mobility has stalled: Liz’s son, like many millennials, faces the same financial struggles as his parents, while Howard’s children inherit advantages that compound over generations. The result? A nation where GDP and billionaire wealth grow, but ordinary citizens feel poorer.
