Highlanders FC handed league leaders Scottland FC their second defeat of the season on Sunday, ending a 12-match unbeaten run with a 1-0 victory at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo.
Benjamin Adeugun’s 25th-minute strike proved the difference, as Highlanders defended resolutely to secure a vital win. The result lifted Highlanders to sixth place on the log, 12 points behind Scottland, but the victory carried deeper significance for the Bulawayo side.
Scottland coach Norman Mapeza did not shy away from the result, admitting Highlanders were the better side on the day. ‘I knew this day would come. Highlanders played well today and they deserved to win. For us all we need is to go back and work on ourselves and try to come back better in our next match,’ Mapeza said.
Despite the loss, Scottland maintained a seven-point lead at the top after second-placed Hardrock fell 2-1 to bottom side Triangle at Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe. The win gave Triangle’s new coach Genesis Mangombe a dream start to his tenure.
Elsewhere, Dynamos played out a goalless draw against Simba Bhora at Rufaro Stadium in Harare, keeping the league race interesting as the season progresses.
