Heimir Hallgrímsson, the manager of the Republic of Ireland national team, did not select former Everton defender Seamus Coleman for the squad that will compete in the upcoming Nations League window.
Hallgrímsson has indicated that he would like Coleman to join the coaching staff, but he has expressed a desire to postpone that invitation until the former defender secures a new club. “Hopefully he’ll get a club. If it doesn’t we still want to have him in as one of our coaching staff,” Hallgrímsson said. “My intention, in whatever shape or form that will be, he will be with us in the future, hopefully as a player.”
Coleman is still searching for a club and has not been training with a team. He said he felt it would be unfair to be selected for the national side while other players were actively involved in club football. “We felt, together, it was more his decision that it was appropriate he would sit out this one, mostly because he felt it was unfair to other players that he would be picked at this moment,” Hallgrímsson explained.
The absence of captain Nathan Collins, who is recovering from a calf injury, was cited as a reason why Coleman’s presence would have been valuable. Collins’ injury has left the team without its usual leadership figure for the upcoming fixtures.
