**Gyrfalcon Numbers Rise in Northeast Iceland**
*Reykjavík, 30 August 2026* – A recent survey by the Icelandic Institute of Natural History indicates that the gyr‑falcon (Falco rusticolus) population in the northeast region of the country has grown by roughly one‑third compared with the previous year.
The study focused on a designated research area spanning approximately 5,300 square kilometres. Within this zone, researchers identified 88 gyr‑falcon territories. Of those, 35 were confirmed as occupied during the latest monitoring period, reflecting the noted increase in breeding pairs.
The institute’s findings highlight a positive trend for the species in the region, though the report does not elaborate on the underlying causes of the population change. Further monitoring is planned to assess whether the upward trajectory continues in subsequent years.
