Guyana: Second Venezuelan Remanded In AK-47 Rifle Smuggling Probe

A 54-year-old Venezuelan national has been charged and remanded to prison as part of an investigation into a transnational arms-smuggling operation. This follows the seizure of 23 AK-47 assault rifles and over 500 rounds of live ammunition in Region Three earlier this month. The individual, identified as Juan Felipe Gonzales, resides in the Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo.

Gonzales appeared before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver at the Wales Magistrate’s Court under police escort on Monday. He faces an indictable charge of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony, which violates Section 33 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act. This charge is linked to a coordinated sting operation conducted on June 11, 2026, at a property in Schoonord, West Bank Demerara, by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU).

Following the raid, Gonzales reportedly went into hiding but was apprehended by intelligence officers on June 18. During his arraignment, he was not required to enter a plea. Prosecutors opposed bail, citing the serious nature of the charges, the potential penalties, and Gonzales’s status as a flight risk. Magistrate Weaver agreed with the prosecution’s arguments, denying bail and remanding Gonzales to prison until July 14, 2026, pending further case developments.

This case follows the earlier arraignment of 27-year-old Jonathan David Gans, another Venezuelan national, who was arrested during the June 11 raid. Gans faces separate charges related to possession of firearms and ammunition without a license.

Authorities have not disclosed specific details about the weapons cache, but intelligence sources suggest that investigations are ongoing to trace the logistical networks involved in smuggling the firearms. The seizure is considered one of the largest illegal arms discoveries in Guyana in recent years, prompting a multi-agency investigation with international law enforcement collaboration to ascertain the origins and intended destinations of the weapons.
