The revitalisation of the historic Stabroek Market in Georgetown, Guyana, is advancing with a multi-billion-dollar master plan aimed at modernising the area while preserving its architectural heritage. The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development recently held a technical session to review preliminary engineering concepts for the project, which is part of a broader urban renewal strategy supported by a $2 billion allocation in the 2026 National Budget under the Georgetown Restoration Initiative.
During the session, Minister Priya Manickchand met with the technical design unit from the King’s Foundation, an international urban design institution, to discuss the project’s spatial development. The revitalisation plan focuses on creating a human-centered urban environment, improving infrastructure for local vendors, corporate storefronts, and tourists, while addressing longstanding drainage and traffic issues in Stabroek Square.
A spokesperson from the Ministry stated, “Our core objective is to deliver a revitalised urban space that supports livelihoods and responds directly to the modern needs of Georgetown.” The plan emphasizes a consultative approach to ensure that future developments are inclusive and maintain the historic character of the market.
The Georgetown Restoration Initiative includes several budget allocations:
- Stabroek Market & Bourda Green Restoration: $2 Billion for civil works, roof reconstructions, and structural upgrades.
- City Avenue & Public Space Enhancements: $200 Million for pedestrian corridors and urban green spaces.
- Municipal Training Council Central Area: $150 Million for facility rehabilitation.
- Lamaha Street Carriageway Infrastructure: $100 Million for transit corridor improvements.
- Municipal Street Lighting & Safety Networks: $35 Million for smart street lighting installation.
However, the project has led to tensions between the central government and municipal leadership. Mayor Alfred Mentore expressed disappointment over the exclusion of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) from the recent meeting with the King’s Foundation. He criticized the Ministry for not involving the City Council, which he believes is the primary stakeholder in any development within the municipality.
Mayor Mentore stated, “For the Minister and her team to execute this meeting in isolation is another direct move trying to usurp the operational authority of the council.” He plans to draft formal correspondence to the Minister and the King’s Foundation to advocate for full municipal integration in the planning process. While the Ministry has committed to engaging all relevant stakeholders as the project progresses, the situation underscores the complexities of managing a significant urban transformation in Georgetown.
