Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat has addressed claims made by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed concerning the natural gas pipeline intended for Wales, West Coast Demerara. Mr. Mohamed alleged that the pipeline had ruptured at sea, leading to pollution in the area.
In a statement made on Wednesday night, Minister Bharrat denied these claims, stating that there are “no reports” indicating that the pipeline has been damaged. He emphasized that the pipeline is currently inactive and that there is no gas flowing through it at this time.
Mr. Mohamed, who was reportedly on a boat in the Atlantic Ocean, claimed that the pipeline had been damaged three months ago at a depth of 30 feet, approximately two miles offshore from the Marriott Hotel. However, Minister Bharrat suggested that tests might be underway, which could explain any observations made by Mr. Mohamed.
ExxonMobil, the company responsible for the pipeline, had previously indicated that the pipeline would be filled with nitrogen until it is ready to supply gas to the electricity generation sets and the natural gas liquids plant located at Wales, West Bank Demerara.
A disaster response expert also commented to Demerara Waves Online News, stating that, to his knowledge, the pipeline had not sustained any damage. As of now, ExxonMobil has not provided a response to inquiries regarding the situation.
