Guyana: Duncan Calls for Forensic Inquiry into Death of 16-Year-Old Altaf King

APNU Member of Parliament Sherod Duncan has called for an independent forensic inquiry into the death of 16-year-old Altaf King. Duncan argues that the case should not be treated as a standard traffic fatality, citing conflicting accounts regarding the circumstances of the incident. King reportedly died during a police pursuit, which has raised public concern due to differing eyewitness testimonies compared to the official narrative.

During a press conference held by the APNU, Duncan stated that the situation warrants a more rigorous examination. He remarked, “This matter should be treated as potentially an unlawful death requiring an independent forensic first inquiry, not just treated as a routine traffic fatality.” While he clarified that he is not presuming guilt on the part of the Guyana Police Force, he emphasized the public’s right to a process that adequately addresses the conflicting accounts.

Duncan highlighted several factors that he believes support the need for an independent investigation. These factors include King’s young age, his recent completion of CSEC examinations, allegations made by his brother, and the lack of immediate published forensic findings. He also criticized the official handling of similar cases, expressing that the public has become accustomed to inadequate responses from the police and government officials.

APNU Vice Chairman Vinceroy Jordan expressed condolences to King’s family and emphasized the importance of a thorough police investigation that leads to accountability. Duncan further contextualized King’s death within a broader pattern of controversial police-related fatalities in recent years, mentioning several other cases that have left many Guyanese dissatisfied with their resolutions. He reiterated the party’s demand for a thorough, impartial, and independent investigation into King’s death, stating, “We call for justice to be served.”
