GBTI launches five-year CARE initiative to strengthen community development, sustainability

The Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry Limited (GBTI) launched a five-year corporate social responsibility program, the “CARE Initiative,” on Friday, November 6, 2026. The launch, held at the bank’s recreational center in Bel Air, coincides with the institution’s 190th anniversary. GBTI Chairman Suresh Beharry stated that the initiative is designed to formalize the bank’s approach to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. According to Beharry, the program aims to provide structure and accountability to the bank’s community contributions, ensuring that its growth aligns with sustainable and inclusive national development. The CARE Initiative, which is scheduled to run from 2026 to 2030, is organized around four primary pillars: community development, advancement through financial literacy, responsible banking, and environmental stewardship. Beharry noted that the bank intends to integrate these ESG principles into its lending practices, risk management, and daily operations. GBTI Chief Executive Officer Shawn Gurcharran highlighted the bank’s recent growth and its commitment to supporting Guyana’s evolving economic landscape. He emphasized that the bank’s strategy focuses on innovation and sustainability as it serves an increasingly sophisticated customer base. To mark the launch of the initiative, the bank announced a $4.8 million donation to St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital. The funds are designated for the renovation and enhancement of the hospital’s “GBTI room,” intended to support the facility’s healthcare delivery and patient care services.
