Flávio Bolsonaro rechaza victoria de Lula y anuncia que pedirá anular las elecciones en Brasil

Flávio Bolsonaro, senator and brother of former president Jair Bolsonaro, announced on Sunday, 25 October, that he will not recognize the results of Brazil’s presidential election and will seek to annul the second‑round vote that elected Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to a fourth term. The senator said that the extension of the voting period by two hours, from 17:00 to 19:00, was a controversial decision that undermined the legality of the election. He argued that the late judicial ruling, which was intended to allow voters in areas affected by heavy rains to cast their ballots, created unequal conditions because some polling stations had already closed when the extension was announced. Bolsonaro stated that his legal team would file a challenge with the courts to invalidate the election. He did not present evidence of irregularities that would alter the outcome, but he cited the timing of the extension as a factor that could affect the fairness of the process. The Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) confirmed Lula’s victory in the second round, with 51.76 % of the valid votes (64,120,476 ballots) against Bolsonaro’s 48.24 % (59,759,548 ballots). The margin was 4,360,928 votes, a difference that the TSE declared decisive. Lula’s win will allow him to serve as president from 2027 to 2030. The extension of the voting period had been requested by both Lula’s campaign and some opposition groups, citing transportation difficulties and weather‑related disruptions. The TSE’s decision was aimed at ensuring that voters in affected areas could exercise their right to vote, but the late communication caused confusion at some polling stations. Reactions from other political parties were mixed. Leaders of the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB) and the Republican Party (Republicanos) acknowledged Lula’s victory and congratulated him, distancing themselves from Bolsonaro’s call to annul the election. Members of the Social Democratic Party (PSDB) also accepted the result and expressed a commitment to maintain an institutional opposition in the upcoming legislative term. The announcement by Flávio Bolsonaro marks a new phase of political and judicial controversy in Brazil, though the filing of a legal challenge does not automatically mean that the election results will be overturned.
