Egypt Increases Suez Canal Transit Surcharges for Oil Tankers and Bulk Carriers

Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has raised temporary transit surcharges for most commercial vessels transiting the waterway, effective July 15, 2026. The revised charges increase costs for oil tankers, bulk carriers, and general cargo vessels, while leaving the canal’s underlying transit dues unchanged.

The SCA announced the adjustments through a series of navigation circulars, stating the surcharges are temporary. The move comes amid ongoing efforts to manage traffic and revenue in the vital global trade route.

Shipping companies and traders are expected to feel the immediate impact, as higher surcharges add to operational costs. The Suez Canal remains a critical artery for international commerce, handling about 12% of global trade.

Industry analysts suggest the surcharges may be linked to recent expansions and maintenance projects. The SCA has not specified when the temporary surcharges will be lifted.
