Djibouti’s Minister of Agriculture, Water, Fisheries, Livestock and Halieutic Resources, Radwan Abdillahi Bahdon, has ordered immediate interventions in Houmed Loita and Zeila streets in Djibouti-ville after inspecting significant dysfunctions in water and sanitation networks. Accompanied by the interim director general of ONEAD, technical officials, the prefect of Djibouti, and the sub-prefect of the 2nd arrondissement, the minister observed wastewater overflows, stagnant water, gray water discharges on public roads, and drinking water leaks. Following the visit, he instructed ONEAD teams to promptly commence cleaning, unclogging drains, cleaning drainage structures, and repairing damaged pipes to restore normal infrastructure operation. Authorities state these works aim to reduce health risks from stagnant water, improve residents’ living conditions, and prevent waterborne diseases. Additionally, the Interior Minister tasked the prefect of Djibouti with enforcing hygiene and sanitation rules to halt gray water discharges. The government reports that interventions have already begun, with first results expected in the coming days.
