**District Commissioner Reassures Houttuin Residents Over Halliburton Permit Status**

*Wanica District, Suriname – 29 August 2026* – Following complaints from residents of the Houttuin neighbourhood about construction activities attributed to Halliburton, District Commissioner Ernesto R. Muller of Wanica South‑East ordered an on‑site assessment by the National Environmental Authority (Nationale Milieu Autoriteit, NMA) on 28 August.

The NMA’s inspection confirmed that the authority has granted approval solely for an operational base where oil‑containing materials are washed. No environmental permit has been issued for the storage of radioactive sources at the site.

In a statement to the public, Commissioner Muller said the findings “should reassure the community” and emphasized that Halliburton does not currently hold a licence to store radioactive material in the Houttuin area.

The district office has not indicated any further regulatory actions at this stage, but will continue to monitor the situation to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
