DA to engage political parties in coalition talks after strong election showing

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced that it will begin coalition negotiations with other parties in South African municipalities that did not elect a single party to an outright majority in the 2026 Local Government Elections. In a statement released by the party’s Federal Executive, it said the executive had resolved to engage with parties in any municipality where no single party secured a majority. The DA noted that it emerged as the largest party in many of those municipalities, often with a significant lead over its nearest competitor. The Federal Executive has directed the DA to initiate talks with parties that share its commitment to “clean and accountable government, fighting corruption, service delivery, the rule of law and non‑racialism.” These principles, the DA said, will form the basis of its coalition approach. The party outlined its coalition priorities as establishing stable and effective municipal governments that put residents first, restore accountability and improve service delivery. “The DA approaches these discussions with humility, and we will respect the will of the voters,” the statement added. It emphasized that the voters had given a clear mandate and that the DA wanted the post‑election governments to reflect the need for stability and better service delivery. Coalition discussions will be coordinated nationally under the authority of the DA’s Federal Executive to ensure a consistent and principled position across the country. The party said it is ready to govern and work with other parties that share its commitment to building municipalities that work for all residents. Coalition negotiations will determine who governs municipalities where election results have not produced an outright majority, with parties needing to secure sufficient support to form municipal administrations.
