The Civil Court has ordered Transparency Maldives to hold MVR 356,932 (US$23,100) in its bank accounts, the amount owed to former employee Ali Shareef after a seven-year legal battle over constructive dismissal.
The order came after the anti-corruption watchdog failed to pay within three days as directed by the court earlier. Shareef had asked the court to freeze the organisation’s accounts, but the court instead ordered only the outstanding sum be set aside.
Transparency Maldives maintains that its accounts have not been frozen and that the order covers only the uncontested amount. The NGO says it is pursuing an appeal at the Supreme Court and will comply with all court orders.
Shareef was found to have been constructively dismissed by the Employment Tribunal and the High Court, which upheld the ruling. The tribunal had ordered reinstatement and back pay, but Transparency Maldives has not complied, leading to enforcement proceedings.
