Colombia recibirá más de 300 soldados de EE.UU. para ejercicios contra el narcotráfico

Colombia will receive more than 300 U.S. soldiers for joint anti‑narcotics exercises, the Colombian Army announced on Monday. The U.S. troops will arrive on Tuesday at the Tolemaida military base in the municipality of Nilo, Cundinamarca, where the fourth edition of the “Vanguardia del Sur 2026” training exercise will run until November 11. During the exercise, members of the Colombian Army’s No. 1 Counter‑Narcotics Battalion will exchange tactics, techniques and procedures with light infantry soldiers from a U.S. mountain battalion. The training will begin on Friday, October 30, with a simulated aeromedical evacuation from Tolemaida to the Cavalry School in Bogotá. Aircraft and specialized medical equipment will be used to test the medical and first‑aid procedures of both armies in a scenario involving a wounded person in a mined area, according to the Colombian Army’s statement. The exercises aim to strengthen military cooperation and assess the ability of both forces to operate together, coordinate maneuvers and make decisions in operational scenarios. The arrival of U.S. troops comes amid a deepening security partnership between Bogotá and Washington. President Abelardo de la Espriella, who took office on August 7, has made cooperation on security and anti‑narcotics a central part of the bilateral agenda. He recently formalized Colombia’s participation in the “Shield of the Americas,” a U.S. initiative launched by former President Donald Trump to enhance regional cooperation against drug trafficking and criminal organizations. The partnership was highlighted on September 8 when U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Barranquilla and met with President de la Espriella. The two leaders announced the “Barranquilla Agreements,” a roadmap that includes cooperation on security and anti‑narcotics efforts.
