Coimbra City Hall has approved an update to the Municipal Tourist Tax, doubling the fee from €1 to €2 per overnight stay. The decision, finalized on July 20, follows an annual evaluation of the current regulations and an updated economic and financial justification based on 2025 municipal data.
According to a press release, a technical study revealed that municipal expenses directly related to tourism amounted to €1.94 million in 2025, with an additional €36.95 million in indirect costs. With 698,151 overnight stays recorded in the city last year, the cost per overnight stay was estimated at €3.49.
Despite the increase, the municipality aims to keep the tax at €2 per night, which is 42.7% below the estimated cost. Officials say this approach balances compensating for tourism-related expenses while preserving Coimbra’s competitiveness as a destination.
The municipality confirmed that no changes are planned to the current exemptions and exceptions in the tax regulations. The updated rate will apply to future overnight stays in the city.
