A 70-year-old man from County Tyrone was arrested by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) on Thursday, September 17, in connection with alleged sexual offences committed in the Republic of Ireland.
The individual is wanted to stand trial for charges including rape, sexual assault, and false imprisonment, which reportedly occurred in Galway in 2022. The arrest was carried out by officers from the PSNI’s Local Policing Team in the Dungannon area under an Irish extradition warrant.
The man is scheduled to appear before the Laganside Extradition Court on Friday, September 18.
Sergeant Davey of the PSNI’s International Policing Unit stated that the arrest demonstrates the ongoing cooperation between the PSNI and An Garda Siochana in locating fugitives. Sergeant Davey added that Northern Ireland is not a safe haven for individuals attempting to avoid arrest and that the police service will continue to pursue those seeking to evade justice.
