Prison officers intercepted a package containing cigarettes and dozens of lighters after it was allegedly thrown over the perimeter wall of the Port of Spain Prison on Tuesday morning.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service, the package was discovered at approximately 6:45 a.m. on September 29, 2026, by officers attached to the facility.
The package contained 13 packs of L&M cigarettes, 10 packs of Du Maurier cigarettes, 20 loose L&M cigarettes and 32 cigarette lighters. The items are classified as prohibited articles within the prison system.
Acting Commissioner of Prisons Elvin Scanterbury commended the officers involved, saying their vigilance and prompt intervention prevented the prohibited items from entering the prison population.
The Prison Service said sustained vigilance remains an important part of protecting the safety, security and integrity of correctional facilities across Trinidad and Tobago.
Members of the public were also reminded that attempts to introduce prohibited articles into prisons are unlawful and can pose a threat to prison security and rehabilitation efforts.
Investigations into the incident are continuing with assistance from external law enforcement agencies.
