Calypso Rose arrives in wheelchair to receive Elite Calypso honour

Calypso Rose made a memorable arrival at the Caribbean Music Awards in Trinidad and Tobago, appearing in a wheelchair as she prepared to receive the Elite Calypso Award. The Tobago-born legend was smiling and surrounded by supporters and members of the media as she arrived for a night recognising her extraordinary contribution to Caribbean music. Her appearance carried particular significance because Rose was there personally to receive the honour after decades of representing calypso internationally. Speaking with Slam 100.5 FM, Rose said she felt “very happy and very proud and very much alive” to be recognised in Trinidad. The wheelchair formed part of the striking scene, but the focus remained firmly on Rose and her presence at the ceremony. After a career spanning generations, the calypso icon was still able to attend, speak about her journey and experience the appreciation being shown to her. Rose has taken Trinidad and Tobago’s music around the world and helped break barriers for women in calypso. Her arrival therefore became more than an entrance to an awards ceremony. It was the sight of one of the Caribbean’s enduring musical figures showing up to receive another major recognition during her lifetime. And as Rose herself made clear, she was happy, proud and very much alive to experience the moment.
