Bhutan Extends USD 100 Sustainable Development Fee Through 2029

Bhutan has announced that the USD 100 nightly Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) for international tourists will remain in effect until 31 December 2029. The fee, which was originally set at USD 200, was reduced to USD 100 on 1 September 2023 as part of a four‑year tourism incentive aimed at supporting recovery, employment and foreign‑currency earnings. The original reduction was scheduled to expire on 31 August 2027, but the government has now extended the lower rate for an additional two years and four months. The SDF is a government levy applied to each night an international visitor stays in Bhutan. It is separate from accommodation, flights, guides, transport, meals, attraction fees and the one‑time visa application fee. For example, an adult staying for seven nights would pay USD 700 in SDF. The fee applies only to tourists who pay in U.S. dollars; Indian nationals are subject to a different SDF structure. Revenue from the SDF is paid directly to the government and is earmarked for national priorities such as environmental conservation, cultural preservation, infrastructure, healthcare, education and tourism development. The extension provides greater certainty for tour operators, hotels and travel partners, allowing them to price and market trips beyond August 2027 without the risk of the fee reverting to USD 200. This is particularly important for long‑haul markets where itineraries may be planned several years in advance. The government has stated that the USD 100 rate will remain in effect until 31 December 2029 unless a further policy change is announced before that date.
