Turkish Soldier Killed in Border Incident with Iran; Joint Investigation Underway A Turkish soldier was killed on 31 October 2026 during an operation against an illegal border crossing in the Yucsekova area of Hakkari province, near the Turkey‑Iran frontier. The Turkish Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed that the soldier, Yusuf Saait Unlu, died from gunshot wounds sustained while responding to the incident. Unlu was a contract professional soldier, similar to the Greek Armed Forces’ Professional Soldiers (ΕΠ.ΟΠ.). The MoD stated that the gunfire that caused Unlu’s death “is believed to have originated from the Iranian side of the border.” An investigation was immediately launched, and a meeting between Turkish and Iranian officials took place on 3 November 2026 at the incident site to determine the circumstances of the exchange of fire. Official Statements During a weekly press briefing at the Turkish Ministry of National Defence, Admiral Zeki Akturk expressed condolences to Unlu’s family and the Turkish nation. He also outlined the Turkish Armed Forces’ activities, border security measures, international relations, exercises, and developments in the defense industry. The MoD’s statement read: > “On 31 October 2026, during an operation against an illegal crossing at the border post in the Hakkari region, the soldier Yusuf Saait Unlu was killed as a result of gunfire that is estimated to have come from Iran. A judicial and administrative investigation was immediately initiated, and a meeting with Iranian authorities was held on 3 November 2026. Iranian authorities have also begun judicial and administrative investigations into the incident. We continue to conduct a thorough investigation in coordination with Iranian authorities.” Context Turkey has invested heavily in securing its border with Iran, constructing walls, patrol roads, and surveillance infrastructure, particularly after the U.S. and Israel launched military operations against Iran in 2025 and 2026. In September 2026, Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi met with his Iranian counterpart, Esnatar Momeni, in Ankara to discuss counter‑terrorism, organized crime, and border security. Iran has not issued an official comment regarding the investigation. Summary The death of Sergeant Yusuf Saait Unlu has prompted a joint Turkish‑Iranian investigation into the incident that occurred on 31 October 2026. Both sides have initiated judicial and administrative inquiries, and a meeting was held on 3 November to assess the exchange of fire. The Turkish Ministry of Defence has expressed condolences and reaffirmed its commitment to investigating the matter thoroughly.
