Nicky Butt, former Manchester United midfielder, publicly criticised Argentine defender Lucas Martínez for raising a flag that read “Las Malvinas Argentinas” after Argentina’s 2‑1 victory over England in the 2026 World Cup semi‑final. Butt said Martínez “does not deserve sympathy” because of his on‑field performances and his criticism of United’s management. He added that Martínez, who lives in England, “acts as if he is a national hero” while still calling for changes in the club’s transfer policy. The flag‑raising incident prompted a fine from FIFA. The governing body imposed a £235,000 penalty on the Argentine Football Association for what it described as a “political display.” Martínez was one of several Argentine internationals who lifted the flag during the post‑match celebrations. Butt also highlighted Martínez’s recent disciplinary record. The defender was sent off in a 0‑2 loss to Chelsea, having caused a penalty and received a red card for a handball. He criticised Martínez for being “overly sensitive” to criticism while simultaneously questioning club officials, noting that Martínez had publicly expressed disappointment with United’s transfer strategy after a 0‑2 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League. In a separate incident, police in Coventry arrested a 14‑year‑old fan for allegedly mocking supporters of Sunderland during a Premier League match between Coventry City and Sunderland. The boy was released on bail after being charged with a public order offence. Coventry City issued a statement saying the club would not tolerate hateful behaviour and would cooperate with authorities. Meanwhile, Newcastle United’s new coach Matthias Yaseh faced mounting pressure after the club’s 1‑0 loss to Everton. The team sits in 13th place with 11 points from 12 Premier League games. Yaseh admitted responsibility for the team’s poor form, citing a lack of confidence and overreliance on long‑ball tactics. Newcastle have lost seven home games in 2026 and scored only 12 goals in nine league matches, the lowest in the division. The club’s defensive record has also suffered, with the team conceding 14 goals in its last 14 home fixtures.
