Jordanian airstrikes in Daraa province kill seven civilians, prompt Syrian condemnation On Tuesday, 27 October 2026, the Jordanian Air Force carried out four airstrikes in the town of Al‑Tuf in rural Daraa province, southern Syria. According to Jordanian sources, the attacks targeted several sites, but the Syrian Ministry of Health reported that the strikes killed seven civilians—including a senior man, a woman and three children—and wounded four others. The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning the operation as “unacceptable” and said it undermines the “special brotherly relations” between the two countries. The ministry said it was coordinating with Jordan to establish an urgent joint field and security committee to prevent future violations. Residents of Daraa, who attended the funeral of the victims, demanded an investigation into the Jordanian raids. They asked the Jordanian side to clarify the targets, stating that the sites were civilian and that the province had no terrorist presence. Syrian parliament member Ghazlan called for a joint investigation and said that while the relationship between the peoples of Syria and Jordan is strong, the governments must not ignore responsibility and must compensate the families of the victims. Military analyst Imad Shihoud said the decision to form a joint committee was a “late action” that should have been taken before the operation. He blamed Jordanian intelligence for failing to verify the coordinates and for using F‑16 aircraft to strike a “terrorist cell,” noting that such operations should aim to capture elements alive. Shihoud also said that the error had caused civilian casualties that should be compensated. Political analyst Ali Eid said that a security gap in southern Syria, exacerbated by Israeli restrictions on Syrian security forces, contributed to the situation. He said Israel is a primary cause of the chaos and that the lack of coordination between Jordan and Syria shows they are not on the same page. Eid said the incident raises questions that need answers and that the Syrian foreign ministry’s statement was an attempt to balance sovereignty with the need for prior coordination. The operation has sparked public anger in Syria, especially because there is no evidence that any terrorist fighters were killed. The Syrian foreign ministry reiterated that Syrian territory is the responsibility of the Syrian state and that operations should only be carried out with prior coordination.
