On Monday, 26 October 2026, the United States Marine Corps base at Kadena, Okinawa, announced a new restriction that bars all vehicles manufactured by the Chinese automaker BYD from entering the base perimeter. The decision was justified by U.S. officials on the grounds that electric vehicles equipped with cameras, sensors and other electronic devices could potentially collect and transmit sensitive security information, posing an “unacceptable and irreducible” risk to U.S. personnel and operations. The Marine Corps spokesperson, John Severns, said that base commanders are responsible for protecting people, facilities and missions, and that they may take risk‑based security measures to mitigate potential threats. Severns added that similar restrictions could be extended to U.S. bases in South Korea, according to a Korean news agency citing U.S. sources. The ban follows the U.S. Department of Defense’s June 2026 designation of BYD and several other Chinese technology and manufacturing firms as “Chinese military enterprises” because of alleged ties to the People’s Liberation Army. The designation prompted strong protests from China’s Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which accused the United States of over‑generalizing national security concerns and unfairly targeting Chinese companies. China demanded that the U.S. correct its approach. In September 2026, the Dutch intelligence and security agency issued a warning that modern connected vehicles, which include GPS systems, microphones, cameras, entertainment systems and Bluetooth connections, could be exploited by foreign actors for espionage or remote control. Kadena Air Base is the largest U.S. air force installation in the Far East and a key strategic hub for U.S. operations in the Western Pacific and the “first island chain.” The base hosts the U.S. Air Force’s 18th Wing and houses the “Tide‑Feng” missile system, which carries long‑range Tomahawk cruise missiles.
