In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the deal would give the United States “permanent control over security and all other needs” in Greenland and that the U.S. would begin developing a large military presence in a suitable part of the island.
According to U.S. officials, the agreement includes arrangements that would prevent other countries from establishing bases or deploying forces in Greenland without written U.S. approval, and it contains mechanisms to block the presence of Chinese or Russian military forces on the island.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a statement saying the agreement would enhance joint security in the Arctic and North Atlantic while affirming Denmark’s sovereignty and the right of Greenland’s people to self‑determination.
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Ines Frederiksen Nielsen, welcomed the agreement, noting that it would strengthen the security of Greenland, Denmark, the United States, and the broader Western alliance while taking into account Greenland’s interests and international standing.
The Danish government said the agreement is expected to be signed next week, pending the completion of national parliamentary procedures, and that it would remain contingent on those procedures.
Washington already maintains a military presence in Greenland through the Børefik Space Base, which supports early warning missile operations, missile defense, and space surveillance under a 1951 U.S.–Denmark defense agreement.
